Delhi fuel ban for old vehicles to be reversed?

Delhi Environment Minister Maninder Singh Sirsa has announced a hold on the implementation of the denial of fuel to End-of-Life (EOL) vehicles, until a more conclusive policy can be drafted, one that considers the present condition of the vehicle and its PUC status.

Announcing the rollback of their policy (Direction No.89, dated April 23, 2025) that was implemented yesterday (June 2) around the EOL Vehicles, the Delhi Government has said that it will suspend the enactment of and the scrapping of 10 and 15-year-old diesel and petrol vehicles until November 1, 2025. The move that was being enacted across the NCR over the last two days has been put on hold till a more conclusive policy can be structured.

As per the letter to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Minister has stated, "The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has been complying with the direction of honourable NGT and honourable Supreme Court regarding implementing ban on EOL vehicles, deregistering them and ensuring them that they do not ply on Delhi roads. However, as far as the implementation of the Direction No.89 regarding denial of fuel to all EOL vehicles as identified by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is concerned, it is felt that because of several critical operational and infra challenges mentioned below, it will not be feasible to implement this order at this juncture."

The Minister further added, "A stage-wise implementation that begins only in Delhi will not serve its intended purpose."

This means that not just Delhi, but the entire NCR area has to implement the whole rule.

This means that the current rollback is only on the fuel ban and not for stopping the scrapping of 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles.
